Benzene Found in Dry Shampoo

Benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, has been detected in dozens of dry shampoo products. Benzene is known to cause cancer in humans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,^[1] the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),^[2] the World Health Organization,^[3] and other regulatory agencies.

How was Benzene in Dry Shampoo Discovered?

Since late 2020, an independent laboratory, Valisure,^[4] has been analyzing consumer products for benzene. On November 1, 2022, the lab reported that its testing of dry shampoo spray products from 34 brands found that 70 percent of these samples contained “quantifiable levels of benzene.”^[5]

“Valisure’s testing found that some of the samples contained up to 170 times the FDA’s ‘emergency’ limit.^[6] The lab reports that these are the “highest and most broadly detected” benzene levels it has ever observed in a consumer product.^[7]

Is Benzene Dangerous?

The Center for Disease Control^[8] (CDC) has found that benzene^[9] is a known human carcinogen, which means it causes cancer and creates other health problems. The CDC advises that long-term exposure to benzene can cause the following problems:

Cancer, including leukemia
Anemia, caused by a decrease in red blood cells
Excessive bleeding
Immune system damage
Irregular menstrual periods and a decrease in ovary size in women
Low birth weights, delayed bone formation, and bone marrow damage in pregnant animals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)^[10] also recognizes the danger of benzene. As a result, the FDA has established that benzene should not be used in the manufacture of any component of a drug product, and when it’s use is “unavoidable,” a strict concentration limit of 2 ppm apply.^[11] In cosmetic products, the FDA has announced recalls of various products contaminated with benzene.^[12]

In fact, this is not the first time benzene has been found in popular beauty and personal care products. In the last 18 months, “several major consumer products companies, including Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson, have announced at least 10 recalls of well-known aerosol brands.”^[13] These recalls involved personal care products, ^[14] sunscreen,^[15]aerosol deodorant,^[16] and children’s hand sanitizer.^[17] Based on these previous recalls and the information these companies learned about the source of the contamination in these other products, the dry shampoo companies should have warned consumers about the risks of benzene in dry shampoo.

Benzene is not a requisite component of manufacturing or packaging dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is not designed to contain benzene, and no amount of benzene is acceptable in dry shampoo. The presence of benzene in dry shampoo is avoidable and any significant detection of benzene is unacceptable. Because of its toxicity, research suggests that there is “no safe level of exposure” to benzene, and the FDA lists it among chemicals banned from use in drug products because of its “unacceptable toxicity.”^[18]
