Schilling Appointed to ABA Young Lawyers Division’s Disaster Legal Services Team

Fishman Haygood partner Blair Schilling was recently appointed to a one-year term on the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Disaster Legal Services (DLS) Team. A partnership between the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), DLS is an initiative aimed at providing survivors with the pro bono legal services necessary to “navigate the aftermath of presidentially-declared disasters.” Since its founding in 2007, DLS has responded to 222 disasters across 45 states and 5 U.S. territories. The YLD works to develop “relevant and timely programming, meaningful policy advancement, necessary public service, and critical membership service.” Interested young attorneys must apply for and be appointed to leadership positions for the upcoming bar year. Attorneys chosen for positions within the YLD are passionate about enriching the legal profession.

Those living along the Gulf Coast are all too familiar with natural disasters. Amidst the increase in Hurricane Laura insurance coverage lawsuits, Schilling recently became a certified mediator by the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, an internationally recognized program at Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law. Schilling currently uses her mediation skills to help alleviate pressures on the court system by regularly mediating Hurricane Ida, Zeta, and Delta cases.

Schilling represents clients in a wide range of commercial matters, with a concentration in environmental law. Click here to learn about her practice.
