Burge Moderates PIABA’s “Detecting Ponzi Schemes and Dodging Professional and Investor Liability” Webinar

On May 22, 2023, Fishman Haygood attorney Jason Burge moderated the Public Investors Advocate Bar Association (PIABA) webinar, “What’s in a PBJ?: Detecting Ponzi Schemes and Dodging Professional and Investor Liability.” Presented by the PIABA Bar Journal, speaker Kathy Phelps discussed Ponzi schemes from the receiver’s perspective, examining both the law governing claims against professionals and other third parties to recover funds for investors, as well as the standards for clawback actions that may seek funds directly from the same investors.

Burge, a partner in the firm’s Litigation Section, asked Phelps for her insights on how investor attorneys can help clients seek recoveries when they’ve been victimized by investment scams. During the webinar, Phelps also detailed how investor attorneys can advise clients about their exposure to clawbacks arising from investments in such scams.

Established in 1990, PIABA is an educational and networking international bar association for attorneys who represent public investors in securities disputes. Burge is the editor in chief of the PIABA Bar Journal, which publishes three issues a year on topics relevant to investor attorneys.
