Scott Willis Named Adviser on ALI Restatement of the Law Fourth, Property

Fishman Haygood Partner Scott Willis has been appointed as an Adviser on the American Law Institute’s Restatement of the Law Fourth, Property, one of the most significant ongoing scholarly projects in American law. The Restatement brings comprehensiveness and coherence to U.S. property law, covering subjects that range from ownership powers and title and transfer to easements, servitudes, land use, and public rights and takings.

The ALI is the leading independent organization in the United States dedicated to clarifying, modernizing, and improving the law. Its Restatements, Model Codes, and Principles of Law carry substantial influence in courts, legislatures, and legal scholarship. Advisers play an active role in the drafting and deliberative process that shapes these publications.

The appointment is a natural extension of Scott’s standing in the field. He has been recognized by Chambers USA in Band 1 for Real Estate since 2010 and Band 2 for Banking and Finance since 2004, and is a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, where he currently serves as Secretary of the 2026 Board of Governors. He also serves on the Board of Regents of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys and on the Board of Directors of the Working Group on Legal Opinions Foundation. His published work and presentations on legal opinions in real estate finance transactions are widely cited across the profession.

For Fishman Haygood, this appointment reflects something the firm takes seriously: staying at the forefront of the law, not just practicing it. Scott’s work with the ALI gives him a direct hand in shaping how American property law is understood and applied for years to come.
