Jim Swanson Appointed to Baylor College of Medicine’s Board of Advisors

Fishman Haygood is pleased to announce that Jim Swanson recently was appointed to serve on the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Board of Advisors (BOA). As a global leader in biomedical education, innovative research, and cure discovery, BCM strives to create knowledge and apply science and discoveries to further education, healthcare, and community service at home and around the world. The BOA is a volunteer, non-fiduciary standing committee of the BCM Board of Trustees. Members are elected to one, 3-year term and lend their passion, counsel, and support to advance BCM’s four mission areas: healthcare, education, research, and community.

Swanson’s latest appointment is indicative of his longstanding—and exceptionally rewarding—relationship with BCM. As a member of both the BCM President’s Circle and Xavier University of Louisiana’s Board of Trustees, in 2020 Swanson spearheaded the Xavier-Baylor College of Medicine Medical Track program, which aims to help remedy the chronic underrepresentation of African Americans in healthcare professions. Upon meeting a rigorous set of qualifications, three participants each year are assured acceptance at BCM following their graduation from Xavier.

“Fishman Haygood was founded on a commitment to excellence, and that commitment extends beyond our office doors,” says Swanson. “Our attorneys take pride in devoting themselves not only to our profession but also to our community and worthy causes, and I am proud to be affiliated with such outstanding institutions.”

Xavier consistently ranks among the country’s top ten undergraduate universities in sending African American graduates to medical school, and BCM is the top-ranked medical school in Texas for research and primary care. The collaborative medical track program not only provides deserving Xavier students with an opportunity to attend a prestigious medical school like Baylor, but also it further fosters both universities’ dedication to diversity and inclusion in the field of medicine. In his legal career, Swanson is particularly known for his securities practice and has obtained multimillion-dollar judgments for his clients in jury and bench trials and commercial arbitrations. For example, following a two-week FINRA arbitration in 2013, Swanson and his team secured a settlement from Citigroup Global Markets to compensate then firm client BCM for losses arising from Baylor’s issuance of auction rate securities to fund construction of its McNair campus. Read more about Swanson’s practice here.
