Fishman Haygood Associate Maya Jones Returns to Southern University Law Center to Inspire the Next Generation of Lawyers

Fishman Haygood Associate Maya Jones returned to her alma mater, Southern University Law Center, as a featured panelist at the SULC Career Fair and Networking Reception, which took place October 29–30, 2026. The event brought together legal employers, practitioners, and SULC students for meaningful conversations, networking, and opportunities for professional growth, with informative panel discussions on legal career paths followed by opportunities for students to connect directly with legal professionals.

Maya’s panel, “Billable Hours & Bad Puns: A Day in Law Firm Life,” offered an honest and practical look at life as a young law firm attorney. Significantly, it provided attendees with the chance to hear directly from someone who sat in the same classrooms not long ago and who understands the opportunities and challenges that come with launching a legal career.

At Fishman Haygood, Maya brings to her litigation work an exceptional record from her time at SULC. She received her law degree magna cum laude and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. Maya also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Southern University Law Review and was Vice President of the Student Bar Association.

While still a law student, Maya founded the Jaguar to JD initiative, a partnership between the Southern University Law Review and Southern University’s Pre-Law Society that offers pre-law students mentorship, professional development, and a glimpse into the law school journey.

Now, as a young attorney, Maya continues that work. Her return to SULC is a natural extension of the commitment she made as a student: to make the path into the legal profession clearer, more welcoming, and more attainable for those who follow.
